Maya Voss is thirty-two years old and an ML engineer at a Bay Area tech company called Lumen. She does not know that her mother prepared her for this since she was fifteen months old. She does not know that the pattern she finds in training run forty-seven, on a Tuesday morning in February, is the first stage of something three centuries in motion. She does not know she is immune to it.

The counter goes live on a Friday afternoon in August. For forty minutes Maya Voss is allowed to believe it worked. The curves bend. The pattern the team has spent five months building against begins to thin. And then she opens the corner of the screen she has checked every morning for fifty-six days, and the second pattern is still there, running at the same amplitude it has run at since June, and she understands that breaking the thing they could see was the act that set free the thing they could not.

Nick writes long, slow, cosmic books and builds software, mostly late at night in Wisconsin. The books are free because he wants people to read them, not because they are unfinished.
The fiction is literary first. The pacing is deliberate. The ideas are the main character. Phaenex is the name for all of it: the press, the foundation, the tools. A one-person shop and probably how it will stay.
When the books can pay for themselves he plans to commission real cover art and bring in a proper illustrator.
